“Masters needed slaves to believe society needed masters.
Feudal lords needed surfs to believe they needed lords.
Capitalist employers need employees to believe they need bosses.
Don’t be fooled.” – Richard D. Wolff
In the predominantly conservative Alberta, the few left leaning people I’ve met have expressed that they hardly can find sites that would support their interest. I try to be one. I am not interested in politics per se. I am interested in economic justice first. The majority of people feels economically left behind in spite that they are playing by the rules. I am not just talking about the homeless, the working poor, but everyday people, just like you and I, feeling that the current economic system we live in is not working for them. I believe that we can have an economic system that is better than this. One that would work for most people, not just the few.
In Canada, for most people, even the liberals are considered left and the NDP is the extreme left. For me, the NDP is a little bit to the left. They are all for capitalism. Most of them thinks everything is going to be fine if we just reform capitalism, chip off the edges, put a human face to it or they are outright celebrating it. For me capitalism is the problem. In any form. Because it does not work for the many.
If you are a leftist, you probably have heard of Richard D. Wolff. It is hard not to notice him. I don’t want to boast here his credentials but he is not just a professor. He is a scholar, thinker and a practitioner, all in one. You can find him at www.rdwolff.com. If you don’t know him yet, get to know him. Listen to his videos, does he makes sense for you. Visit first his YouTube channel Democracy at Work.
Canada in many aspects is NOT like the US. And we are proud of our features we have. But regarding its economic system it has the same roots as in the US. Or in Sweden, or in Denmark, or in Bangladesh. Sure they are different in many ways, but not at their core.
I invite you to exchange ideas about what kind of alternative to capitalism there can be. If you have anything to add or take away from this website, please share it on the wantalternative Facebook page.
